HENRIETTA
By Shirley Kelly
(work in progress)
SUMMARY: Henrietta dreams of marrying her childhood
friend despite her parent’s objections. The Duke and Duchess of Branford don’t consider
a penniless man with no title a suitable match for their eldest daughter.
Henrietta’s dreams are crushed when her friend comes home with a wife.
Heartbroken, she vows she’ll never love again. She hardens her heart and swears
to marry solely for position and wealth. She’s ready to accept the proposal of
a man she doesn’t love when she realizes she’s already met the man of her
dreams.
Autumn, 1811
Devon, England
Henrietta smiled with
pride as she untied her apron and looked around the tiny kitchen. The sun
sparkled through the clean windowpanes. Not one spot of dust dared to mar the
worn, but cherished furniture. The delicious smell of chicken and fresh herbs
came from the pot bubbling on the stove.
She couldn’t wait until her dearest friend Peter Wickett came home. She knew he’d be so delighted by her efforts, he’d get down on bended knee. However, she knew her parents would not approve. After all, she was Lady Henrietta Ashford, the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Branford, and they expected her to make a spectacular match. She doubted they would consider marriage to her childhood friend a spectacular match, or for that matter, even a suitable one.
